What is a cozy mystery?
A cozy mystery is a sub-genre of crime fiction that features a minimum of violence, sex, and profanity.
While some law enforcement may be involved, the detectives in these stories are typically amateur sleuths who get caught up in or have some connection to a murder. Supporting characters are frequently eccentric, irksome, or quirky. As in all good “who done its” a cozy mystery involves a sizable cast of characters (many of whom are possible suspects).
These stories commonly take place in a small town or a closed community such as a castle, hotel, beach-side resort, etc. Agatha Christie popularized the small English village as the setting in her cozy mysteries.
Many cozy mysteries have a measure of humor to them. They can also involve romance to one degree or another.
Generally, a cozy mystery is a story you can curl up with by the fire, in a hammock, or under your beach umbrella. A cozy mystery is an entertaining read and can be a suspenseful, but not so much it will wake you up with nightmares.
